A little bit of help when they need it.

WHY COACHING?

Regularly spaced coaching sessions during the school year can keep students on
track with what they want to achieve. Most students want to make the most of their
opportunities and abilities, but they have a lot going on and find it difficult to organise
their thought processes sufficiently to manage their lives in the best way. Coaching
can help them take control.

WHAT IS COACHING?

Coaching is a process that takes you from where you are now to where you want to
be. It helps you to work out your goal and how to get there.
It is not counselling; coaching does not look backwards nor seek to explain why you
are where you are.
It is not advice; coaching works on the premise that you have the solutions to your
questions, you just need the coach to help you work out what they are.
Coaching is a process of focused listening and incisive questions, which enables you
to work out what you want to achieve and what you need to do to succeed.
A first coaching session will involve:
1. Establishing a goal
2. Working out what you need to do to achieve it
3. Identifying any obstacles to this
4. Investigating ways to overcome the obstacles
5. Agreeing on first steps you can take to start towards your aim
Subsequent sessions build from actions taken and look at any obstacles and ideas
that can be addressed to improve your progress. Over a number of sessions, spaced
out to give you time to reflect and take action in between, you will start to take
responsibility for the direction you are going in.
This is empowering for students, who may feel a lack of control over their exam year
amidst all the commitments and pressure and uncertainty that brings, and through
the process they will learn skills that will see them through their future years of
education – and life!

FOR PARENTS

The exam year can be stressful for everyone in the family. Coaching sessions can
take some of the tension out of the situation by giving the student a neutral space in
which to think clearly about how they are going to achieve success, and what they
need to do to get there. The sense of ownership and responsibility can be very
motivating for them, and the space in between sessions makes this a low-pressure
environment.
